See the collages of muti-talented author/artist Mirinda Kossoff. In creating a collage, I usually start with an idea, feeling or image that compels me. For materials, I use acrylic paint, found objects, paper, and sometimes photographs that I’ve taken. I use found objects from nature—such as lichen, feathers, dried flowers or bark—and also from discarded man-made materials such as a piece of rusted metal, a small glass tile or a button. These objects are at once both familiar and mysterious.

In April 1874 a group of artists, calling themselves "Société Anonyme des Artistes, Peintres, Sculpteurs, Graveurs" -- roughly "Artists, Painters, Sculptors, Engravers, Inc." -- opened an exhibition independent of the official Salon. Conspicuously absent was Edouard Manet, recognized leader of the avant-garde. Manet never participated in any of their eight exhibitions, but his bold style and modern subjects inspired these younger artists, who came to be known as "impressionists."
