Family & ParentingForget the Marines: if you're a working mother, you're the one who does more before the sun comes up than most people do all day. Getting the kids up, dressed and fed, finding lost items, packing lunches and getting everyone to school on time can feel like a full-time job in itself. And that's before you fight the traffic to get to work.

Family & ParentingWe choose our friends, or they choose us, but family is a hand-me-down. If we outgrow friendships, or choose to end them because they have turned toxic, even though the process is difficult, we close those doors and move on with our lives. However, how do we handle family members who are negative, critical, unfeeling and domineering? After all, for some of us this is the only family we have!

Family & ParentingJason Roberts listened to his son's explanation of the missing cookies and then called him a liar. Brenda Taylor thought her three-year-old's lies were cute, so she ignored them. Yee Chen told her daughter that if she told the truth this time, she would let it go.

While all of these parents love their children and want them to develop truth telling as a virtue, each violated one of the eighteen do's and don'ts of dealing with lying. Read on to find out how.

Family & ParentingAt a recent parent/teacher conference I learned that Austin, age 12, had several school assignments unaccounted for. Reasons given by my grandson for the missing assignments included:

"It's in my locker."

"I know I did it. I don't know what happened to it. I remember doing it."

"My teammate must not have turned it in."

"I didn't know we were supposed to turn that in."

"I didn't have a pencil. No one would loan me one."

Family & Parenting1. Turn Off The Television and the Video Games In 1993, the American Psychological Association estimated that 10 percent of aggressive behavior in children could be attributed to TV violence.

A study published in the January 2001 issue of Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine provides evidence that television and video games contribute to aggressive behavior in children. Children watch an estimated 21 hours of TV per week.

80-93% of the children’s programs contain violence.

Children’s programs contain 41 aggressive acts per hour with attempted murder every 2 minutes.

Television and video violence promotes aggression in children in 3 ways. First by showing children that violence is a way to resolve conflicts. Second by making children less sensitive to violence. Third by encouraging a belief that the world is “mean and scary”. Stop using the T.V. and video games as a way to “entertain” or even “baby sit” your children. Get them active in reading, art, music and good old fashioned conversation about the world around them.
